Perched on Gallow Hill beside the village of Leuchars in Fife, St Michaels Golf Club offers golfers spectacular views stretching across the River Eden toward the historic skyline of St Andrews. The course occupies the site of a prehistoric settlement protected by Historic Scotland, giving the landscape a unique blend of character, heritage, and natural beauty.
St Michaels is an intriguing mix of wooded parkland and rolling heathland, set on a naturally well?draining sandy base. Its small, subtle greens and narrow, precision?demanding fairways ensure a challenging but rewarding test for golfers of all abilities. Though it may lack the prestige of its world?famous neighbour in St Andrews, St Michaels provides its own formidable and enjoyable experience from the very first tee; uphill with a fairway sloping gently from right to left.
The club’s signature hole, the Par?3 15th “St Mikes”, is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque and demanding short holes in Fife. With a steep dip to the left and behind, a guarding bunker front?right, and out?of?bounds along the left side and railway line beyond, it’s a hole that rewards nerve and accuracy in equal measure.
Originally laid out in 1903 by golfing legend Old Tom Morris, along with fellow Old Course Custodian Hugh Hamilton, the course was extended in 1996 to fulfil their original vision of a full 18?hole layout.
A round at St Michaels is memorable for all the right reasons. Full of surprises, strategic challenges, and sweeping views toward the spires of St Andrews. Despite its modest length, the course is renowned as a tough and intelligent test, offering several of the finest Par 3s in the county and an experience that keeps golfers returning time and again.
