Course Description

Ballyliffin is Ireland’s most Northerly located golf course. The Old Course is a classic links course with fairway running through dramatic dunes. It is a typical traditional links, where if someone has issues with balance will face great difficulties as it is very unlikely to find any flat part on the course.

There is no
exact date about the earliest engagement with golf in Ballyliffin. However, it is well
known that the old Course started its life as a typical 9 holes course. Work on
the ‘new’ course actually began in 1970, this course is what we know today as
the old links, which originally contained 9 holes. Three years after, the
course was extended to 18 holes. Ballyliffin was designed by Eddie Hackett
along with the opinions of Charles Lawrie, Frank Penncik and Martin Hopkins.
The final lay out of the course incorporated all of their recommendations and  designs. For the next
twenty years the Old course stayed out of the spotlight and was going through
some difficulties until in 1993 the links were ‘rediscovered’ by Nick Faldo and
the development committee.  Soon after
they got engaged in the renovation of the old course which was completed in a
record speed and by 1995 the course was officially opened for play.

Nothing can describe
more the distinctive natural beauty of this course than how Nick Faldo commented:

“One of the
most natural courses I have ever played” – Nick Faldo
