Intro to Golf in St Andrews
Introduction to the 'Home of Golf'
St Andrews has been a royal burgh since 1140 when founded by King David. The University was founded in 1413 and is the oldest in Scotland. Many historic buildings still survive in the town today giving St Andrews a very Medieval feel.
For many, the highlight of St Andrews is it is home to the famous Old Course, St Andrews and Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the focal point of world Golf. There are 11 golf courses in the St Andrews area, 6 of which are in the town itself.
The town of St Andrews is ideal for golfers wishing to experience the unique atmosphere of playing golf where it all began six centuries ago. The radiance of the town is second to none with it hosting regular major golf championships, such the Open which returns in 2010 as well as the annual Alfred Dunhill Championship. In 2007 the Ricoh Women's British Open was staged at the Home of Golf the first time it has been outside the USA.
